Change outgoing mail port in Mac Mail

This article will discuss how to change the outgoing mail port in Mail for OS X.

This is typically changed if your Internet Service Provider (ISP) is blocking the standard SMTP port (port 25).

  1. Open Mac Mail by clicking the Mail icon in the dock.  If the icon is not in the dock, navigate to Macintosh HD > Applications > Mail and double-click the application.
  2.

  3. In the menu, select Mail > Preferences.
  4. Click the Accounts icon in the Preferences dialog box and select the account for which the port is being changed.
  5. Click the Account Information tab and under Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP), select Edit SMTP Server List from the drop down.
  6. Click the outgoing mail server used for this account and then click the Advanced tab.
  7. Change the radio button from Use Default Ports (25, 465, 587) and choose the Use Custom Port radio button instead.
  8. Enter in the new custom port (typically 50 for shared mail servers) and click OK. Mail will now check for email on the new port.
