How do I open a command prompt?

The following article explains how to open a command prompt. Through the command prompt you are able to execute operating system commands. Examples of commands include telnet, tracert and ipconfig. The method used to open a command prompt will be determined by the operating system of the machine.

Windows Vista | Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows 98/95

Windows Vista

  1. Click the Vista icon to display the Start menu.
  2. Click the Command Prompt option.
  3. If that option is not available, type cmd in the search box at the bottom and press Enter.

Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows 98/95

  1. Click Start and select Run.
  2. Type cmd and click OK.
