How do I use my shared SSL?
This document will answer your questions about our SSL certificate options.
- Question:
- What does SSL mean?
- Answer:
- SSL stands for Secure Socket Layer. The information that is sent from the web browser to our server is encrypted and sent in a format that is not readable by anyone but the server. This allows sensitive information, like credit card numbers and passwords, to be sent across the internet securely.
-
- Question:
- How do I get access to the shared SSL?
- Answer:
- The shared SSL certificate is included free with all shared plans. For Linux hosting plans and for those who add MIVA Merchant to their hosting plan, the SSL certificate is already setup for you. For Windows hosting plans, you can activate your SSL certificate easily through the Control Panel. For detailed instructions, please refer to our support article found here.
-
- Question:
- What will the URL to my secure pages look like?
- Answer:
- Your shared SSL URL will look like the following: https://www##.safesecureweb.com/username where '##' is a number generated by the server you are on, and 'username' is the username you are assigned at account setup. This information will be supplied to you once the shared SSL is configured.
-
- Question:
- How do I get SSL that looks like https://www.mydomain.xyz?
- Answer:
- You will need to purchase a certificate that is configured
specifically for your account from a certificate company. There are
a number of certificate companies to choose from. We order all of
our certificates through a company called XRamp. The XRamp
certificates start at $89. This includes the purchase of the
certificate as well as the installation. Information about our
XRamp certificates can be found at http://www.hostmysite.com/ssl/.
If you prefer to order the certificate on your own we will first need to generate a CSR (Certificate Signing Request) which we will send to you. You then send this to the certificate company and once they created the certificate you send that back to us and we install it for you. The cost for the CSR and installation is $35 for the year. There will be an additional charge from the certificate company for the certificate. If you would like to purchase a certificate for your site please contact us either by phone or email us at support@hostmysite.com. -
- Question:
- How do I upload to my secure site?
- Answer:
- The shared SSL certificate extends to your entire website. You
do not need to upload your site to a separate location. Upload your
site as normal and simply link to the secure portions within your
code.
For example, https://www1.safesecureweb.com/yourname/ will point to your index page. If you have a page in your root directory called mypage.htm, the secure link for it would be https://www1.safesecureweb.com/yourname/mypage.htm. -
- Question:
- How do I link my regular pages to my secure pages?
- Answer:
- You would link your secure pages using the secure links as described above with the same procedure as linking non-secure pages.
