User Permissions in SharePoint

When a user is created in SharePoint, it must be assigned permissions. The user created during the setup process has Full Control. This article discusses what each permission means for a user.

The following are the four levels of permissions for SharePoint:

  • Full Control - the user has full control over lists, documents, libraries, etc. within the SharePoint site.
  • Design - the user can view, add, update, delete, approve and customize lists, documents, libraries, etc within the SharePoint site.
  • Contribute - the user can view, add, update and delete lists, documents, libraries, etc. within the SharePoint site.
  • Read - the user can only view lists, documents, libraries, etc. within the SharePoint site.
