How do I enable POP retrieval of emails from an external mail account?

The following article explains how to POP retrieval of emails from an external mail account. Enabling this will allow you to access email on another mail server through SmarterMail. Before you can configure this in SmarterMail, you will need to contact support and ask them to enable this feature for your domain in SmarterMail.

To enable POP retrieval, please follow these steps:

  1. Contact support and request to have POP retrieval enabled for your domain in SmarterMail.
  2. Once support has enabled POP retrieval for your domain, open a browser window and go to one of the following URLs:
    • http://mail.domainname.com
    • http://mail#.safesecureweb.com (this address is provided in the setup email)
  3. Login as the mail user that needs POP retrieval configured.
  4. From the top menu bar, click Settings.
  5. From the left side bar, click POP Retrieval.
  6. Click New.
  7. Enter the requested information:
    • Server Address: enter the incoming mail server for the external mail account
    • Port: enter the appropriate port, usually 110
    • Username: enter the username for the external mail account
    • Password: enter the password for the external mail account
    • Enable POP Authentication: check this box is authentication is required
    • Leave Messages on Server: check this box if you wish to leave a copy of the message in the external mail account
    • Requires SSL: check this box is SSL security is required
    • Destination Folder: select a destination folder from the drop down
  8. Click Save.
