Set up Abuse Detection in SmarterMail

This article will go over setting up basic abuse detection within SmarterMail. You can choose Denial of Service (DoS), Bad SMTP Sessions (Harvesting), or set SmarterMail to email a recipient if a certain number of messages are sent within a certain timeframe.

  1. Log into the email domain as the domain administrator.
  2. Navigate to Security > Advanced Settings > Abuse Detection.

  3. From there, click New.
  4. In the Detection Type you can choose Denial of Service (DoS), Bad SMTP Sessions (Harvesting), or Internal Spammer Notification.
    • A Denial of Service can be set to monitor SMTP/POP/IMAP connections after a certain number of minutes, then block the connection for a certain number of minutes as well.

    • For Bad SMTP Sessions (Harvesting), the same options apply.

    • Lastly for Internal Spammer Notification, you can set SmarterMail to email a recipient after X number of messages were sent in a specified time frame.

  5. Once done, click Save and the abuse detection is setup and takes effect immediately.
