Upgrade SmarterMail
Upgrading SmarterMail (major version to new minor version release)
Follow these steps to upgrade to the latest version of SmarterMail if you are upgrading from a previous 6.x release (for example from SmarterMail 6.0 to SmarterMail 6.5):
- Back up the SmarterMail data which is typically in C:\SmarterMail and C:\Program Files (x86)\SmarterTools\SmarterMail
- Download the latest automated installer from the SmarterMail Download page.
-
Run the auto installer
- During the installation process you will be prompted for the installation path. The default path listed is recommended. Once done, the installer will initialize and you can log into SmarterMail admin
All configuration data and emails are preserved when upgrading from a previous 6.x release.
Upgrading to latest major SmarterMail version (major version to new major version)
The steps below outline how to upgrade SmarterMail to the latest version from version 3.x, 4.x and 5.x.
- Back up your SmarterMail installation and data which is typically in C:\SmarterMail and C:\Program Files (x86)\SmarterTools\SmarterMail
- Uninstall SmarterMail from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. All configuration data and email will be preserved
- Download the installer from the SmarterMail Download page
- Run the installer. You may be prompted to install .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 which will require a server reboot. After rebooting the server, start the installer again and it will pick up where it left off
- You will be prompted for an installation path. The default path listed is recommended
- The installer will automatically run. You will need to provide the new license key and reconfigure your spam settings after the install is complete. If the server is using IIS to serve SmarterMail admin, make sure to change the .NET version from .NET 1.x to .NET 2.0
- After the installation completes, log into SmarterMail and apply the new license
How to upgrade the SmarterMail License
In upgrading to a new major version of SmarterMail (i.e. 5.x to 6.x), a new license will need to be obtained.
-
Go to SmarterTools Web Portal and request your login and password for smartertools.com if you do not have it. In most cases, this is your account administrative email address
- After you receive your login, log into the site
-
Once logged in, click License Keys
-
Click your current license under License Keys to upgrade it
-
Click the Upgrade/Renew License button. Go through the checkout process with smartertools.com. Once the license is upgraded, you can install the appropriate version of SmarterMail following the above outlined steps and apply the license
