View the Logs in SmarterMail 5 and 6

By default SmarterMail is not set to log detailed events so the first thing you should do is enable detailed logging for your SMTP and Delivery logs which will allow you to see greater detail on inbound and outbound mail deliveries.

  1. Log into SmarterMail as the SmarterMail administrator, by default this is admin / admin for the user / password.  This can be reset if needed.

  2. Click Settings > Log Settings
  3. Click Log Detail Levels

  4. This is where you'll adjust the SMTP Log Level and Delivery Log Level to Detailed. Once you've finished Click Save
  5. Now that you are logging details you will be able to parse the logs on your server for detailed information on inbound and outbound deliveries
  6. Click Manage > View Logs

  7. I've included an excerpt below from an email I sent from gmail.com to a hosted domain on the mail server for reference via the SmarterMail Log Viewer

  8. Note how the log shows a successful delivery.

If you ever incur a problem viewing the log files through the SmarterMail interface the next best solution would be to parse the logs directly on the server.

  1. Connect to the server via Remote Desktop
  2. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the SmarterMail Log Path; by default the Log Path is C:\SmarterMail\Logs

  3. Note that each day has its own specific logs so if you are looking for logs for January 26th you'll want to process through the files 2010-01.26-smtoLog.log and 2010-01.26-delivery.log
