Configure Query Timeout Period in SQL Management Studio
In SQL the error "The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding" is due to the default timeout period for queries executed in SQL Management Studio of 30 seconds.

This error is resolved by adjusting the timeout period from the following locations.
- Open SQL Management Studio
- Click Tools > Options
- Expand Query Execution
- Expand SQL Server
- Select General
- Adjust Execution time-out:

- Select Designers
- Adjust Transaction time-out after:

If neither of these adjustments allow the query to execute you can create a registry entry which overrides the default configuration by running the following command from the command line. The value of 300 is 300 seconds (5 minutes).
REG ADD "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Shell\DataProject" /v SQLQueryTimeout /t REG_DWORD /d 300 /f
