How do I adjust the memory used by ColdFusion?

The following article explains how to adjust the memory used by ColdFusion on your VPS. When ColdFusion is installed, it is configured to use an amount of memory based on the total available memory for your VPS. Depending on the applications you are running, you may need to either increase the memory for ColdFusion or reduce the memory to free it for non-ColdFusion applications.

Note: Adjusting the memory for ColdFusion will require you to restart ColdFusion.

To adjust the memory, please follow these steps:

  1. Open a browser window and go to http://ipaddress/cfide/administrator/. You will use the IP address for your Windows VPS server.
  2. Log into the ColdFusion Administrator using your VPS Remote Desktop user.
  3. Under Server Settings, click Java and JVM.
  4. Adjust the Minimum JVM Heap Size (MB) and Maximum Java Heap Size (MB). See below for recommended values.
  5. Click Submit Changes.

Recommended ColdFusion Memory Values

It is recommended to set the Maximum JVM Heap size to approximately half of the available memory size for the VPS. The table below contains recommended values based on the memory of your VPS.

VPS Memory Minimum JVM
Heap Size (MB)
Maximum Java
Heap Size (MB)
256 MB 15 100 - 125
512 MB 25 135 - 155
1 GB 50 175 - 200
