Juniper Solutions

Businesses clearly see the promise of cloud services, which include increased business agility with on-demand applications and services, along with lower IT costs and overhead. One of the most important decisions in moving to the cloud is the choice of a cloud provider, because success of the business is predicated on responsive, reliable, and secure access to the cloud. And that’s where a cloud provider such as HOSTING comes in.

HOSTING builds and operates high-performance clouds for business-critical applications for more than 4,000 customers.  The company owns and operates six geographically dispersed data centers across the United States under an ITIL-based control environment that complies with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) and Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) (formerly SAS 70) frameworks. HOSTING offers the highest levels of availability, recovery, security, and responsiveness in the industry.

“We distinguish ourselves by focusing on quality infrastructure, people, and processes,” says Darrell Hyde, Chief Technology Officer at HOSTING. “We are a customer-focused and engineering-driven organization with strong roots in change management and process, and that enables us to deliver fantastic uptime and reliability to our customers.”

Darrell continues, “Our Critical Availability Service (CAS) SLA guarantees uptime levels and payouts that are unprecedented in the industry. Should an application outage occur, our CAS SLA provides a payout of two times the entire monthly costs to the customer. We’re able to offer that SLA because of the foundation that Juniper gives us.”

Selection Criteria

HOSTING has used Juniper firewalls as part of its managed services offering for nearly a decade. As business has grown, HOSTING has expanded its use of Juniper solutions to its data centers and customer sites.

“We picked the Juniper firewall platform as the way to go because the product was stable and mature,” says Hyde. “Over time, Juniper’s routing, switching, and security platforms have continued to prove themselves to be high-performance, highly reliable, and deliver a low total cost of ownership.”

HOSTING’s data center networks are all Juniper. The cloud provider has used Juniper Networks® MX Series 3D Universal Edge Routers and EX Series Ethernet Switches for the network core and edge for more than five years. Using Juniper routers and switches has significantly improved the reliability of its data center core networks over its previous vendor. “Moving all Layer 3 routing to MX Series routers has dramatically improved the stability and uptime of the network,” says Hyde.

HOSTING uses a variety of MX Series platforms, including the MX480, MX240, and MX80 routers. MX Series routers are Ethernet-centric services routers that are purpose-built for the most demanding applications. Powered by the Juniper Networks Junos® operating system and the Junos Trio chipset, the MX Series delivers unprecedented scaling in bandwidth, subscribers, and services to ensure investment protection in even the fastest growing markets, such as managed services and cloud services.

Using EX8208 and EX4200 Ethernet Switches for server aggregation has allowed HOSTING to address the escalating demands for geographically distributed applications and virtualization. Juniper Virtual Chassis technology on the EX Series switches delivers operational efficiency, business continuity, and network agility. Virtual Chassis technology enables multiple interconnected switches to operate and be managed as a single, logical device while consolidating switch layers to reduce management overhead.

“Virtual Chassis has enabled us to make capacity management simpler. We can create the interface density across racks that we need without uprooting our existing floor plan” says Darrell Hyde, Vice President of Architecture, HOSTING.

With Virtual Chassis technology, HOSTING can easily aggregate network capacity from its virtualized servers. “Instead of having to deliver and manage capacity to 36 racks, I can use EX Series switches to deliver capacity to three or four Virtual Chassis,” says Hyde. “Virtual Chassis has enabled us to make capacity management simpler.”

HOSTING uses the Juniper Networks vGW Virtual Gateway security solution as part of its Cloud Firewall service. vGW is instrumental in allowing HOSTING’s customers to easily provision new services it monitors and protects HOSTING’s data centers and cloud services while maintaining maximum capacity and performance. HOSTING also uses Juniper Networks ISG Series Integrated Security Gateways to provide firewall, VPN, and intrusion prevention system (IPS) services in its data centers.

HOSTING uses Juniper Networks SRX650 Services Gateway in its data centers and SRX240, SRX210, and SRX100 gateways at its customer sites. SRX Series Services Gateways pack high port density, advanced security, and flexible connectivity into easily managed platforms. HOSTING has deployed thousands of Juniper firewalls at customer sites, including SRX Series Services Gateways and SSG Series Secure Services Gateways.

One key differentiator is the HOSTING Customer Portal, which allows customers to manage their cloud assets. Customers use dashboards to instantly add cloud resources or clone machines as well as monitor events that are important to their business. Behind the scenes, the Customer Portal leverages Junos Space SDK for programmatic hooks to glean the network intelligence that’s necessary to enable this self-service.

Secure access to the Customer Portal is granted through Juniper Networks MAG Series Junos Pulse Gateways running Junos Pulse Secure Access Service as well as the SA Series SSL VPN Appliance. MAG Series gateways running Pulse Secure Access Service enable dynamic policy-driven security enforcement with the Junos Pulse client to create a simplified user experience for consistent and secure remote access to cloud resources.

Performance, availability, and security are top-of-mind for customers that want to move to the cloud. “At our annual HOSTING Customer Summit, our top customers told us overwhelmingly that 100% availability was their most important requirement,” says Hyde. “That’s definitely in line with our product direction. Availability and uptime options designed to meet our customers’ business objectives have been a key deliverable for us the last couple of years.”

With Juniper in its data centers, HOSTING is able to offer highly competitive services to its customers. “We are using Juniper to build the best network for our customers,” says Hyde. “In the competitive cloud marketplace, we have to offer our customers the best.”

One example is HOSTING’s Critical Availability Service (CAS). “Our CAS SLA guarantees uptime levels and payouts that are unprecedented in the industry,” says Hyde. “Should an application outage occur, our CAS SLA provides a payout of two times the entire monthly costs to the customer. We’re able to offer that SLA because of the foundation that Juniper gives us.”
